Grandma's old film

September 9, 1999

When the family was going through Grandma's apartment recently, we found some old Hawkeye Instamatic and Hawkeye Instamatic II cameras lying about. Two of them had exposed film in them.

One of the rolls of film was Triple Print film - a pre-1977 film that is only still processed at a few labs around the world, including Rocky Mountain Film Lab. That roll is being sent away for processing, but the lab warns that due to low volume it could take up to nine months for the film to be returned.

Fortunately, the other roll of film used the more modern C-41 process and was processed by a local camera shop which sent it off to Kodak.

Below are the pictures that turned out from that roll. By the content of the pictures it is known that the film was shot around 1977, the time Andy graduated from high school. All the other pictures were exposed before the graduation pictures, so it is assumed that those pictures were taken before June, 1977.

I've scanned the film in and done some digital enhancements to them to reduce some color problems that the old film has. Leave film in a camera for 22 years and it tends to degrade a little. In addition to the degradation of the film there are blurry out-of-focus looking pictures. Any picture that is blurred appears to be due to camera motion, not film problems. Here is a side by side comparison of how one of the pictures looked before and after digital processing.

So, here are the pictures we have so far along with my knowledge/wild guesses as to the content. If anyone remembers where the images were from let me know and I'll update the captions. Click on any of the pictures to see a bigger version.

Andy preparing for high school graduation, June 1977. Note the long hair - must be one of them hippie tree-huggers! Also of interest is the white Dodge Dart in the background, with the just-barely-illegible I Lost It! bumper sticker in the rear window. This was a parody of the wildly popular I Found It! bumper sticker distributed at the time by Campus Crusade for Christ. I personally prefer Campus Crusade for Cthulu's It Found Me!
Pat (Mom), Andy, and Doug (me!). Note the groovy powder-puff blue leisure suit I'm wearing! How did I survive the second grade? Also note my elongated cranium. Photographic blurring or evidence of extraterrestrial heritage? You decide. Grandma's backyard? Anyone recognizing this or the following pictures please let me know.
A blooming tree (as seen from the backyard? Same fence is visible.) Grandpa sitting in a back patio type area. The same yard? Note similar fence. Also note what appears to be a tape recorder on the table. Was Grandpa being interviewed by Gordon?
A picture of the coast. Location?
